Mahishasuramardini Cave Temple Mahabalipuram

The cave shrine faces east and has three chambers. Its internal dimensions are 32 feet in length, 15 feet in width, and 12.5 feet in height. There is the frontal projection of the main central chamber when compared to the two chambers which flank it. In the front façade of the cave are 10 horseshoe-shaped windows which are kudus on the cornice; these are unfinished carvings. The cornice also depicts carvings of five gable-roofed semi-complete shrines.

Cave 3, also facing north, is 60 steps away from Cave 2.

Temple has a vestibule with an open top. the sanctum is conical. The exterior has stunning carvings of deities and secular figures. Elephant statues sustain the weight of the temple at the base. ln, the interior we first see Vishnu & Shivaling facing north. But there is no Nandi who has separate Mandir. Separate Actor-Pendal, hall, old pillars, carvings of gods & male and female artists in various poses are attractive. The ceiling is semi-circular with rnatchless engravings. On the outside, complete 'Shivaleelamrit' is carved.
