This is a brahma lingam installed after brahma felt pleased for the penance of Bali Chakravarthi for Shiva at this place. Hence Shiva here is called Brahmalingeswara. 

Even the Varahi river's legend is linked to this place. Vishnu who was searching for Hiranyyaksha in varaha roopa, happen to see Bali Chakravarthy doing penance and requesting holy water for abhishekam. Vishnu pleased by Bali Chakravarthy's penance gave raise to Varahi river by his side.
